June 5, 12, 19: Dr. David Martin on “New Jersey at Gettysburg”
It is probably safe to say that the battle of Gettysburg is the best known battle in American history. The very name calls to mind, not a small town in southern Pennsylvania, but three crucial days in the Civil War. Less well known is the part New Jersey troops played in these three decisive days. New Jersey men did their duty at well known places like the Peach Orchard, Devil’s Den, the Wheatfield, and Cemetery Ridge, and they played a key part in repelling attacks by Confederate Generals George Pickett and Jeb Stuart. To honor and commemorate New Jersey’s service at Gettysburg, the New Jersey Civil War 150th Anniversary Committee is sponsoring a lecture on New Jersey at Gettysburg which will be presented at Camden County College on June 5, Roebling Museum on June 12, and Bergen County College on June 19. Dr. Martin is a well known Civil War historian and author. His works include the seminal study Regimental Strengths and Losses at Gettysburg, the award winning Gettysburg July 1, and most recently, New Jersey at Gettysburg Guidebook, which was published by the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association.
