American Heroes in Bronze: The Artwork of James E. Kelly

An exhibit of bronze sculptures is currently on display in the upstairs gallery of Macculloch Hall Historical Museum. “American Heroes in Bronze: The Artwork of James E. Kelly” is co-curated by William B. Styple and the Museum’s Curator of Collections Ryan Hyman. This new exhibit explores the work of Irish-American sculptor James E. Kelly (1855-1933). In the decades following the American Civil War, over forty Union Generals visited the New York City studio of Kelly, who was highly respected for his artwork’s historical accuracy. While the war heroes sat, the artist conducted in-depth interviews regarding their wartime service, and heard their very personal stories of Fort Sumter, Antietam, Gettysburg, and Appomattox.  The work resulting from these personal interviews presents a unique perspective on the famous figures and events from the Civil War. Also included in this exhibition are Kelly’s depictions of notable events from the Revolutionary War and well known civilians such as Thomas Edison and Clara Barton. Bas reliefs, busts, engravings and bronze sculptures depict these heroes. The collection of Kelly’s work is on loan from private collectors and can be viewed during touring hours. Continue reading

Raised in 2000, today it has a home with The Friends of the Hunley, who continue to uncover the secrets of the ship. Have we piqued your interest? Then join us to learn from Hunley expert Bill Jenkins about this incredible tale.

June 5, 12, 19: Dr. David Martin on “New Jersey at Gettysburg”

It is probably safe to say that the battle of Gettysburg is the best known battle in American history. The very name calls to mind, not a small town in southern Pennsylvania, but three crucial days in the Civil War. Less well known is the part New Jersey troops played in these three decisive days. New Jersey men did their duty at well known places like the Peach Orchard, Devil’s Den, the Wheatfield, and Cemetery Ridge, and they played a key part in repelling attacks by Confederate Generals George Pickett and Jeb Stuart. To honor and commemorate New Jersey’s service at Gettysburg, the New Jersey Civil War 150th Anniversary Committee is sponsoring a lecture on New Jersey at Gettysburg which will be presented at Camden County College on June 5, Roebling Museum on June 12, and Bergen County College on June 19. Dr. Martin is a well known Civil War historian and author. His works include the seminal study Regimental Strengths and Losses at Gettysburg, the award winning Gettysburg July 1, and most recently, New Jersey at Gettysburg Guidebook, which was published by the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association. More information is available at www.njcivilwar150.org.
