‍Eugene Van Sickel is a professor of history at North Georgia University and the co-editor of Waging War for Freedom with the 54th Massachusetts:  The Civil War Memoir of John W. M. Appleton.‍‍

James Robbins Jewell is a professor of history at North Idaho College.  He is the author or editor of three books, including co-editing Waging War for Freedom with Eugene Van Sickle.‍‍ ‍

Both hold Ph.Ds. in History from West Virginia University, where the Appleton collection is held in the West Virginia and Regional History Center.‍ ‍‍ ‍

James Robbins Jewell is a military historian and professor of history at North Idaho College, with a focus on the American Civil War, particularly in the far West. He holds a Ph.D. in History from West Virginia University. His writing career started when his first article was published while he was an MA student in History at Eastern Washington University. He is currently working on two projects, editing the memoir of a WWI division commander and, in collaboration with Eugene S. Van Sickle, a monograph on the 54th Massachusetts that will be far more than a regimental history.
