Railroads in the Civil War

American railroads were in their infancy when they found themselves deeply involved in the Civil War.  Lessons learned from railroad involvement changed the conduct of warfare forever.  Conversely, lessons learned in the war changed railroading forever.

About the Speaker

Don Lee is a railroader.  He retired after a 42-year career in the railroad industry.  He is a lifelong railroad historian and from his railroad interests has developed an interest in the Civil War.

Don has been a member of the West Jersey Chapter, National Railway Historical Society since 1965.  He has served as president.  He is currently a chapter director and is the design and layout editor of the chapter historical magazine, West Jersey Rails Quarterly.

Don is a past trooper and adjutant for the Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, an Ohio mounted reenacting group.  At the time of his involvement the Sixth OVC was the largest cavalry unit in the United States.  At full muster, they could put 75 horses on the field.

Don spent most of his working career in Ohio, but has roots in New Jersey, having grown up in Audubon.  He is a graduate of Audubon High School, Camden County College and Drexel University.  Don and his wife Bonnie are full-time RVers.  They have slept in their own bed in 48 states.  Home is where you park it.

While Don has not written a book on the topic the book below is suggested reading. Available on Amazon.
